Why Fat Shaming Is Not Okay

Fat shaming is not okay.

Fat shaming is bullying.

Fat shaming doesn't result in anything positive.

Recently a fitness model/'personal trainer' took to public TV to say, "the more we fat shame, the more people will keep their mouth shut and stop overeating."

This particular someone has no idea what they are talking about.

How they get on TV and then asked for advice, just blows my mind.

What about the person who is on the verge of suicide and gets fat shamed?

Or the person who has been trying to lose weight for 20 years and gets fat shamed?

Never mind hypothetical situations, the studies show that it can lead to anxiety, depression, poor metabolic health, increased weight gain and a tendency to binge eat.

As a face to face personal trainer and an online coach who has helped A LOT of people lose weight, I cannot find one scenario where fat shaming would have benefited any client.

Not one.

I have even helped a handful of clients overcome anorexia and shaming them on their anorexia would have never resulted in anything positive either.

Empathy, support and guidance is what we need in anyone around us to overcome anything.

Filling someone with guilt, insecurity and lack of self esteem will do nothing.

My mission is to transform bodies and change lives through coaching and education.

Without education, you say stupid things like fat shaming will stop people over eating.

This really grinds my gears.

There is a BIG BIG BIG difference in showing tough love and fat shaming.

And even tough love should only be given to someone who has the personality to handle it.

If this email changes one persons perspective on fat shaming, this time was well invested.

If this email helps you understand someone close to you that has experienced fat shaming/still experiences it and gives you a solution to helping them, I'll lay my head on the pillow tonight a happy man.
