What Humans Can Learn from Fleas

Yesterday I recorded a podcast that I'll release on my birthday called, "31 Lessons From a 30 Year Old."

This was the most impactful point that I said and I left it for last, point 31.

The Flea Experiment.

A group of fleas were placed in a glass jar.

As soon as they familiarise themselves with the glass jar, they begin jumping.

They jump so high that they can escape the jar.

A lid is placed on the jar, so they can't escape, for three days.

When the lid is removed, the fleas can only jump as high as the lid and no higher.

Even though previously they could jump up and out of the jar, they are stuck and have fell susceptible to learned helplessness.

In psychology, learned helplessness is a state that occurs after a person has experienced a stressful situation repeatedly. They believe that they are unable to control or change the situation, so they do not try, even when opportunities for change are available.

It's as if the lid is still there and they still live within this limit.

As hard as it is, we must continue to ask ourselves the question... "Can I jump a little higher?"

Can I work a little harder?

Study a bit more focused?

Train a bit more consistently?

We've all failed diets, slept in through alarms, turned a blind eye or doubted ourselves but this experiment can be a great reminder that often the limits we have around us, are created by ourselves and no longer existed (if they even did in the first place).

In other news, yesterday I released another podcast that I did with the Cosmetic Chemist Ron Robinson.

He's the CEO of BeautyStat and a real wealth of knowledge when it comes to skin health, skin hygiene and skincare you can expect to learn:

  • What to eat to have glowing and radiant skin

  • The two things you need to do to avoid having aged and damaged skin.

  • What influencers are getting wrong with their viral morning skincare routine videos

  • How Ron built his company from the ground and up and the skincare product that is taking the world by storm.
