Facts Friday: Why Sleep Deprivation Is Stoping You From Losing Weight π©
Today, I want to introduce you to the first edition of Facts Friday.
An email series where I provide you with hard facts to help push you along your fitness industry closer to the truth, and results, and further away from the gimmicky bull$hit.
So here we are, let's me hit you with some facts about your sleep and how it impacts weight loss and also maintaining your weight loss.
If you really want to read the study yourself, click on the study below, or just read my simple breakdown below π
THE FACTS
- Increasing professional and social demands, the advent of artificial lighting at the turn of the last century, and, more recently, the widespread use of computers and other electronic media have reduced the average duration of sleep from 9 hours a night in 1910 to 7.5 hours in 1975, and less than 7 hours today.
- Sleep deprivation due to "social jet lag" is increasing, and it is estimated that one quarter of adults and a larger percentage of children and adolescents are deprived of sleep, as sleeping 5β6 hours per night during the week has become increasingly common.
- The National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) showed significantly higher rates of obesity in adults who reported an average of less than 7 hours a night of sleep.
- A chronic pattern of sleep duration of β€6 hours a night has been associated with a higher body mass index (BMI).
- A higher prevalence of obesity has been reported in people working on night shifts.
- Ξoth better sleep quality and longer sleep duration were documented to be associated with higher success in weight loss efforts.
- Calvin and colleagues observed in a cross-sectional survey that participants increased their energy intake in the range of 1178 to 2501 kcal/daily and increased their weight by 6.5 to 22.5 kg when submitted to experimental sleep restriction (study here).
There is a lot to think about here but let me put it blunt, like I always do.
The less you sleep, the more likely you are to struggle to lose weight, struggle to maintain weight, struggle to hold back from eating tasty carbohydrate and fat-filled snacks and to be overweight/obese.
So what's the solution?
I've put it all in a video that all of my Team Brock Ashby members have access to, so signing up to Team Brock Ashby would be a huge start but a few things to consider are:
- Are you on your phone just before bed? Get off it.
- Are you allowing yourself enough time to sleep? Go to bed earlier.
- Is your room cool and dark? Make it cool and dark.
- Are you waking up at the same time and sleeping at the same time? If not, do it.
These are just a few solutions to help you get results because achieving a body transformation is more than just lifting weights and eating chicken and broccoli.
It's getting the pillars of your life aligned with successful habits.
