Facts Friday: When Is The Best Time To Workout? ANSWERED

Today I want to clarify a huge unanswered question that continues to float around the fitness industry...

What is the best time to workout?

Is it morning before work?

Is it at lunchtime on break?

Is it in the afternoon?

Is it before dinner or after dinner?

It seems no-one can answer this question but let me settle it for you by a study done in 2022...

The study is linked to the image if you click it.

"This systematic review examined whether the timing of physical activity within the day is associated with health. Thirty-five studies, with 17 259 participants, were included. The results of 11 studies suggest that morning physical activity provides greater health benefits than afternoon or evening activity, the results of 12 studies suggest that morning physical activity provides smaller health benefits than afternoon or evening activity, and the results of 12 studies found no differences in health outcomes based on the timing of physical activity.

There is no consistent evidence that physical activity performed at one time of day provides more favourable health benefits than physical activity performed at a different time of day."

So when do we train?

This comes down to the individual and the quick answer to all of it is, train at the time that you're most able to go.

If the morning is hectic with the kids and you can't wake up any earlier, train at lunch.

If your lunches are always inconsistent, train before work.

If after work, you're hanging with friends, being with your family and could never duck away for a cheeky workout, then find a better time to train.

Everyone's schedule and preferences are different but one thing we cannot forget is that we also have to prioritise our workouts and sacrifice a little something else.

You may need to cut down TV.

You may need to arrive to the office 30mins earlier, so you can leave 30mins earlier.

You may need to simply work more efficiently throughout the day, so you can squeeze more work in throughout the day.

Whatever sacrifice you have to make, you must make one because workouts don't simply fall from the sky.

There we have it, Friday Facts bringing you the truth no one else is delivering.

Hope that helps!
