Wednesday Wisdom: Drillers Are Killers
Yesterday I woke up at a rancid time of 2:45am to host a podcast with someone from the states.
The podcast was with another coach who I have studied under and he hit me with a line that stuck.
"Drillers are killers."
He is a brown belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.
Drilling is something you do in Jiu Jitsu when you repeatedly 'drill' a submission, move or transition over and over again.
Refining your technique with each repetition.
The only thing is, not many people want to do it.
They would rather do live sparring because that is fun and vigorous (and what the sport really is, at the end of the day).
The people that don't want to drill are people that prioritise 'getting after it' over 'getting better'.
The gym equivalent would be lifting as heavy as possible all the time without ever lifting lighter to perfect your technique.
Sure, you look strong and impressive but over the long term, you don't get better or stronger.
So what is the goal here?
Are trying to get better or are you trying to show off and be good now?
One option is rooted in self improvement and the other is rooted in egotistic nonsense.
Training hard is important and has it's place but you also must train smart, which is what the heart of Team Brock Ashby is.
Training intelligently but also training hard.
