Gold Medal Syndrome & Why It Hurts Us

Hey,

Have you heard of Gold Medal Syndrome?

After winning gold medals at the olympics, this is the term used to express the feelings that many athletes experience post competition. The illnesses and emotions experienced have been described as: depression, anxiety, loneliness, low self-esteem, emptiness, and loss of self-worth.

Weird, right?

You're arguably the best at your sport in the world and a couple of hours, days and weeks later, you're at the lowest low you have possibly experienced in your life.

It's said too many times but I believe the truth cannot be told enough times.

Focus on the journey, not the destination or outcome.

You don't want the accolades, medals or awards (deep down). You want the skills that can acquire them.

A medal is just a piece of soft metal shaped in a weird way with ribbon looped through it.

A certificate is just a thin slice of a tree with ink on it.

A standing ovation is a big group of new age monkeys hitting their hands together.

We don't really want this if we think about it. We want the skills that lead to this.

The same goes for your body transformation.

When you get a 6 pack, your life doesn't automatically get better.

When your squat goes from 195lbs to 200lbs, your anxiety doesn't evaporate.

You are still the same person externally but if you look within, your skillset and character has changed, which is the most important by far.

Maybe having the dedication and discipline to get a 6-pack is more attractive than actually having one.

So whatever goal you 're going for, don't let it steal you away from what you're really trying to do. Improve yourself, inside and out.
