How To Get More For Less 🤔

As you know, this week I had Dr. Mike Israetel on The Better With Brock Podcast this week.

I would define his content as "come for the fitness, stay for the sex jokes".

He's an extremely knowledgeable individual in the sport science and fitness industry but super funny as well, which is a nice balance.

He has popularised, and even invented, the idea of the Stimulus to Fatigue Ratio when it comes to your workouts.

This is defined as: the amount of stimulus received in relation to how much fatigue is accumulated.

When this is put in context of exercise selection for a workout program, it proposes the question, "how do I get the most for the least?"

The most muscle building stimulus for the least amount of fatigue.

Hack squats vs squats for example.

Hack squats give more stimulus and less fatigue than a barbell back squat would.

Machines are generally less fatigue accumulating because there are less stabilisation muscles, due to the stability that the machine provides.

That doesn't mean you never back squat and ONLY hack squat, it just means if you want a better deal for muscle building returns and lower fatigue, the hack squat is a great option.

However, if you wanted to get stronger, the squat is a much better option.

As Thomas Sowell said, "There are no solutions, only tradeoffs."

But not only does this apply to the exercises like chest press machine vs BB bench press and DB lateral raise vs behind the back cable lateral raise, it also applies everywhere else in life.

Friendships: how much happiness stimulus do you get vs the amount of mental fatigue you get from particular friends?

Career: how much fulfilment and financial stimulus do you get for the amount of work  your produce?

Business growth: how much growth are you seeing for the amount of hours that you're throwing into your marketing strategy?

It applies everywhere and is a great reminder to make sure that what you are doing in this specific endeavour that you're focusing on for the time being, is paying off.

And if your fitness is one of them that is producing too much fatigue for the amount of results that you are seeing, it's time to analyse this ratio and get it playing in your favour with Team Brock Ashby.
