3 Key Takeaways From 'The Outliers' 🤓
Definitely one of the best books I have read to date.
If you're not sure what it's about let me give you the rundown.
It's about successful people and what makes them outliers but also what I discovered, what makes them not too far away from the people that we are.
People like Bill Gates, Mark Zuckerberg and professional athletes.
Here's a few golden nuggets I took from the book that I think you'll benefit from:
1. The 10,000 hour rule.
It takes roughly 10,000 hours to be a master of something and often the people we deem as 'successful' accumulate these hours early on in their life and reap the benefits of this mastery in their careers.
"Practice isn’t the thing you do once you’re good. It’s the thing you do that makes you good."
2. Successful people work harder.
Not only does putting in the time play a huge part but work ethic does. Often this work ethic is anchored deeply in the fulfilment that is found in the work that these people find themselves in.
It is much easier to work hard in something that you are generally interested in as opposed to something you are not.
3. Timing is everything.
Two things we can control is the amount of time we put in and how hard we work bi tone thing we cannot control is the year that we are born. Gladwell shares in his book how all the top IT entrepreneurs in the Silicon Valley were born between 1953 and 1956.
Coincidence? I don't think so.
This isn't mentioned to discourage you to thinking you weren't born in the right time but give a bit of explanation to you as to why some people seem like they really find their feet early on in their lives.
I'm a clear example, I went 100% online as a personal trainer early on in 2020 and by March 2020, almost all work was done online and peoples screen times rocketed up as they spent more time at home in lockdown.
And the people that were online before me, were already 20 steps ahead of me!
One last thing that I'll add to this is that I was born on 31st December and my name is Brock Ashby. First name beginning with B and surname beginning with B.
Don't worry, I'm not going to go all astrological star signs on you...
But the fact I was born on the last day of the year put me almost an entire year behind everyone I was playing sport against because the cut-off date for age grading was Jan 1st. I was smaller than everyone and was forced at a very young age to work harder than everyone else just to get by.
Top that off with the fact both of my names occur very early in the alphabet, I was always selected to go first, or near first, in literally everything. Class games, athletics, swimming events, running events and just playing with mates and my brothers too.
This gave me an important trait that I believe has propelled me to back myself in all situations.
COURAGE.
These are just a few of the things I have learnt from reading this book and I hope it empowers you to become as successful as you want to be on your life.
