Facts Friday: Is Keto Sustainable?

Facts Friday

The fact is...

I forgot to send this on Friday.

So here I am sending Facts Friday to you on a Tuesday (and I'll be sending Motivation Monday on Wednesday, Wisdom Wednesday on Thursday and then I'll finally be up to date with my email-list).

It's been a busy time with my family over from NZ and spending time with my dad who hasn't felt the best and has been in hospital, instead of having a relaxing holiday.

Alright, here we go.

Below is a study on how 63 obese men and women were put on two different diets and responded.

One of the diets was low carbohydrate, high protein and high fat.

The other diet was low fat, high protein and high carb.

Here's what happened...

In the first 3 months and 6 months, the low carb diet was more effective than the low fat diet in terms of weight loss. However, after one year the results were pretty much the same.

"The lack of a statistically significant difference between the groups at one year is most likely due to greater weight regain in the low-carbohydrate group and the small sample size. These data suggest that long-term adherence to the low-carbohydrate Atkins diet may be difficult."

The low carb diet helps you lose weight quicker due to things like retaining less water and potentially it is a more "bland diet" that makes you want to eat less overall calories but it is harder to stick to for a long period of time (over 3-6 months).

This is why I've never recommended the keto diet for to a client.

Not because I'm against it. I'm for anything that will help my clients get better results.

But because I've never seen someone maintain it longer than 3 months in my life and most research papers, show that it cannot be sustained for a long period of time.

So here's your fact of the day...

If you're wanting to get fat loss results a low carb can give you a bit of a head start but it will be short lived.

Which is exactly why I preach flexible dieting with a balanced approach of foods you love with carbs in it, fat in it and high protein.

But don't just take the facts for what they are.
