Facts Friday: The Low Carb Conundrum

The low carb diet has been praised for a while now in the fitness industry.

By keto zealots and by low carb enthusiasts.

And to be fair, it should.

The fact that people are successful with it to lose weight is incredible because it is difficult to lose weight if you do not know where to start but let's get one thing straight.

A low carb diet is not better than any other diet for fat loss that creates a calorie deficit.

In a study in 2012, there were participants put on a Very Low Carbohydrate (VLC) Diet and a High-protein Low Fat (LF) diet for 6 weeks. The diets were matched in calories, which was a 200kcal calorie deficit, and a high protein intake. Specifics are below.

Over the 6 weeks, there was no significant difference in weight loss between the two diets.

The average weight loss for the VLC diet was 5.88 ± 1.20 kg.

The average weight loss for the High-protein LF diet was 4.35 ± 1.32 kg.

I put down the extra weight loss in the low carbohydrate diet to the depletion of glycogen which happens when you eliminate carbs from your diet.

So why am I telling you this?

Because knowledge is power and now you don't have to avoid pizza like the plague.

This study highlights the principle that as long as you create a deficit and have a high protein diet, fat loss will occur at relatively the same rate.

This is why I do not subscribe to diets, I subscribe to principles.

The principle of the calorie deficit.

The principle of high protein.

The principle of sustainability.
