Facts Friday: How The Human Body Burns Calories
60% of the calories we burn in a day comes from our height, weight, age and sex.
20% come from the amount of walking and general activity we do in a day.
5-10% come from our workouts.
A further 5-10% come from the energy it costs us to break down food.
Workout to build muscle, not to burn calories (it's only worth 5-10% of what we burn in a day anyway).
We burn calories in our sleep.
We burn calories taking a poop.
We burn calories driving.
You will never "win" the game of burning as much calories as possible in the gym.
One day you’ve burnt 400, then 450, then 500 and now anything under that will feel like a failure.
Calories burnt in a workout shouldn’t be the focus of a workout but a bonus.
Focus on improving form, getting stronger, sticking to rest periods, training close enough to failure, rehabbing your injury and being consistent.
This is where true progress is made.
