Facts Friday: When & How To Eat Your Protein 🥩
"Eat a high protein diet".
"Protein powder will help you build muscle."
"Have casein protein powder before bed,"
These are some things you may have heard regarding your protein intake, so today I'm going to summarise a new study that was published in April 2023.
In this study, 24 elderly males and females tested the difference between evenly distributed protein or skewed protein distribution throughout the day.
EVEN = 30% protein intake per breakfast, lunch and dinner with 5% protein intake provided through snacks between breakfast/lunch and lunch dinner.
SKEWED = 15% protein intake per breakfast and lunch, dinner was 60% protein intake with 5% protein intake provided through snacks between breakfast/lunch and lunch dinner.
What was better for muscle building?
Neither... It didn't really matter.
What mattered was if they hit the target of their high protein diet over the 24 hour period, not when.
And we can apply this in our lives by ensuring that we keep a daily promise to ourselves.
Hit your protein no matter what.
Whether evenly distributed or skewed, make sure you hit your protein target by the end of the day.
It will ensure you have the amino acids in your system for the muscle building process of Muscle Protein Synthesis.
